The Fabulous World of Explorer Guitars

Hamer Explorer Shaped Guitars

Hamer Explorer Shaped Guitar

The Hamer Explorer is actually just an Explorer shaped guitar. It is actually called the Hamer Standard. It has been reviewed over at Harmony Central as well as a few other guitar forums around the internet. These Hamer Standards appear to be high qualtiy guitars but I've never actually owned one.

This is all the specific info I have right now but if you'd like to add to this description I'd appreciate any information sent to me right here. I'm looking for descriptions, pictures, production years, availablilty, and that sort of info. If you can help out with some details, please do! If you are looking to buy or get an idea on prices, many of the online guitar supply houses stock Hamer guitars.

Message: By the end of 1959 Gibson had discontinued the Explorer model, deemed a failure by management because they had sold less than 100. By 1973 these instruments were obscure and rarely seen When they did surface, they appeared so weird to guitarists that they were practically unsalable.

In a stroke of genius, Jol Dantzig and Paul Hamer (part of the emerging vintage guitar crowd) had the idea to reissue an Explorer model to appeal to the new, young, hard rock musicians of the day. When Gibson indicated that they were not interested, Dantzig and Hamer took things into their own hands and started producing the Hamer Standard, and selling them to bands like Bad Company and Jethro Tull. When Gibson realized their mistake a few years later, they rushed to build an Explorer model to capitalize on Dantzig and Hamer's groundwork. An additional fact is that Dean Zelinski of Dean Guitars was a young protege of Dantzig and Hamer, having worked as a roadie for their band. Dean also took advantage of the opportunity that Hamer had discovered to launch his own guitar company a few years after.
